Bodulaš, island

Bodulaš, meaning ‘man from the island,’ is an island located in the Medulin archipelago. Abandoned, flat, and covered with large white pebbles, its highest point reaches only 2.5 meters.

Galešnjak, island

Brusnik, island

Brusnik is unique for its black pebbles and endemic species of black lizards. Some say its name comes from brus, the Croatian word for whetstone, as the island is full of volcanic black rocks. Others, however, say the name derives from the sea, which for ages has been grinding its shores to protect the island from unwanted visitors.

Cetina, river

The source of the Cetina River, known as the Modro Oko (“Blue Eye”), is a lake spring of mesmerizing blue color that reflects the shades of the sky above. The Cetina, deep and calm at its beginning, transforms into a powerful force as it enters an impressive canyon, foaming over rapids and eventually cascading down the Velika and Mala Gubavica waterfalls. The fifty-meter-high Velika Gubavica Waterfall, set deep within the canyon, is the hallmark of this unique natural wonder.

Neretva, river

The Neretva River forms the largest delta in Croatia. The Neretva Valley is an important wetland area that transitions into fertile agricultural land, where reeds and rushes have been almost entirely replaced by citrus groves. It is especially famous for its mandarin cultivation and the traditional wooden boats (lađe) that are still used today. The power of its lush green landscape sets it apart from the rest of the coast, earning it the name “the green pearl” of southern Dalmatia.

Drava, river

One of the places where it occurs is in rivers with large, rounded stones, which indicate that the river is ancient and that water has been washing over rocks and sediments for millions of years. The Drava River, the second longest river in Croatia, is one such unique place, long associated with a centuries-old tradition of gold panning.

Since ancient times, people have washed gold nuggets from the Drava’s sand using nothing more than a shovel and a sieve, while goldsmiths discovered fine gold dust of exceptional purity. According to tradition, gold seekers would look for pinkish-red sand, for wherever they found it, they knew that gold was near.
